Service Description

Our supportive counseling is guided by spiritual leaders [ministers] using the basic presupposition of the Nouthetic Counseling movement that counseling theories must be filtered through Scripture. This movement believes that all counseling theories and practices must be evaluated and interpreted in light of biblical principles. The general goal is to focus more on understanding and hearing the counselees; and approaching them with a softer confrontation. We further believe man is an original spiritual being and the human spirit is the strongest source of his power. The spirit is the most powerful and most important factor for complete healing. We practice perspective-taking, the ability to put ourselves in the place of someone else while recognizing their point of view, experience, and beliefs. We encourage nonjudgmental and compassionate listening that allows people to share their joy, sadness, anger, concerns, frustrations, and hopes in the context of their full humanity, and for many, their spirituality or philosophical views. We aim to explore a deeper relationship with the spiritual aspect of being human. The basic principles of supportive counseling are: 1) Residing in peace with God, other creations and self; 2) Activate the main abilities of the spirit: faith, hope, and love within oneself; 3) Living in the liberating truth; 4) Accept and devise in faith the inevitable suffering; 5) Strengthen the power of the spirit through prayer, trust in God, forgiveness, biblical study, and sacramental living. Since 1993, the movement has been renamed to Biblical Counseling to emphasize its central focus on the Bible. The Baker Encyclopedia of Psychology and Counseling states; "Nouthetic Counseling aims to effect change in the counselee by encouraging greater conformity to the principles of Scripture."
